This lecture takes an in-depth look at documentary photography during the Great Depression in America and uses the life and work of the influential American portrait photographer to illustrate how portrait photography evolved through her work.

'Life and works of fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld (*1897-†1969)'

The biography of Fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld is viewed against the background of the art historical epoch in which it occurred which is Dadaism, Surrealism, Realism, New Objectivity.

The lecture not only looked at the history of fashion photography and technical progress over the time, but also at which social developments, such as the position of women in society and the relationship to their bodies have changed and how those changes have promoted the image in fashion.

Starting from the origins of fashion photography in the years 1936-1945 by the means of works of Erwin Blumenfeld, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Horst P. Horst the lecture elaborated on how the possibilities to represent fashion in photography have changed and evolved through periods of time during 1950-1980 presenting works of Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Hiro, Guy Bourdin, William Klein up to the contemporary period starting from 2000 until now, illustrated by the works of photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot, Richard Burbridge, Alex Cayley, David LaChapelle, Knick Knight, Inez van Lamsweerde&Vinoodh Matadin, Sege Leblon, Craig McDean, Katja Rawles, Terry Richardson, Solve Sundsbo and Jürgen Teller.
